The credit union is not run to make a profit. The money however that is generated after all expenses have been paid is called the surplus. This is then divided between the Senior members in the form of a Dividend (a return on your share investment during the year) and Interest Rebate (a percentage repayment of the interest you paid on your loan during the year). The Junior members savings are invested and any interest earned is simply distributed back to them in their form of Junior Interest. The Dividend, Interest Rebate and Junior Interest fluctuates from year to year according to how well the credit union performs financially. Listed below are the year by year performances of MTCU. In 1993, 1994 and 1996 there was insufficient funds to pay out a dividend. The interest rebate was only introduced in 2001. The junior interest only started in 1998.
